RSS Feeds

Some of you sharp-eyed readers might have seen or even commented about the three small buttons beside our cool(?) GTRS header. So you know what “home” and “mail us” is, but what about the third button which burps out the word “syndication” whenever you hover your mouse over it? The confusion then continues after you click on it and are taken to a new page parked at “http://www.gtrs.org/feed/rss/”. To those of you who know what this is, sign up right away! To others who are wondering what RSS is, this page has been written just for you.

RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” and it is a method used by any website to push the most recent content on a particular site to those readers who subscribe for this service. Think of it as a combination of Google-mail alerter and Microsoft Outlook. Whenever someone posts a new entry on the site, the subscribed user gets sent an alert very similar to the alert you get from Google-mail Alerter whenever you receive new mail. Double click that message to open your “mailbox” and there it is; the new entry delivered right to your doorstep waiting for you to read it.

To download e-mails to your computer, you need to use an e-mail client like Microsoft Outlook. To subscribe and download RSS feeds into your computer, you need to use an RSS aggregator. A popular RSS aggregator and the one I use is SharpReader. Once you have downloaded and installed the program, copy and paste the URL “http://www.gtrs.org/feed/rss/” into the “Address” box. Press enter and then watch the RSS feeds fill your “inbox”. It is that simple =) Want to “bookmark” the site? Just click on the “XML Subscribe” button sitting right beside the “Address” box where you just entered the web URL.

Besides GTRS, many other online news sites and blog services support RSS feeds. If you find yourself visiting these sites very regularly then RSS has definitely been written for you. We are currently working on getting the pictures and our audio/video sermons directly to you. Till then, do open your browser and drop by our website once a while, for as the familiar Chinese proverb goes, ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’!

Note: Most RSS aggregators require you to have the latest version of the .NET Framework. If you have Windows Update turned on, don’t worry about this. Your computer has probably already sorted itself out ;)
